Difficult Conversations: Talking Oil Sands and the Energy Future

The International Energy Agency (IEA) predicts energy demand will grow globally by 36 per cent by 2035. While renewables will play a bigger role, the IEA predicts most energy demand will continue to be met by fossil fuels such as crude oil and natural gas, making ongoing responsible development of Canada’s natural hydrocarbon resources a necessity.

Representing the third-largest proven reserves of oil in the world, Canada’s oil sands are at the centre of the divided discussion about the role of fossil fuels in our energy future. Are we on-oil or off-oil? Are these the only choices we have? If we must use oil, how do we develop and use it responsibly? Are the various sides in the oil debate capable of having a serious conversation about oil sands and North America’s energy future?

Janet will present IEA and industry energy scenario data and results from CAPP’s latest public opinion polls about oil sands and what they tell us about engaging Canadians in the important energy conversation.

Presenter:
Janet Annesley, Vice President of Communications
Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP)

Janet Annesley is Vice President of Communications for the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP). CAPP represents companies, large and small, that explore for, develop and produce natural gas and crude oil throughout Canada. CAPP’s member companies produce about 90 per cent of Canada’s natural gas and crude oil. CAPP's associate members provide a wide range of services that support the upstream crude oil and natural gas industry. Together CAPP's members and associate members are an important part of a $110-billion-a-year national industry that provides essential energy products.

Janet joined CAPP in 2009 from Shell Canada Energy where she was Senior Manager of Stakeholder Engagement and Major Projects Communications for Shell’s oil sands business, a post she held from 2004.

A native Calgarian, Janet graduated from Mount Royal College. She resides in Calgary with her husband and dog.
