Join leading operators and industry experts in this full day workshop designed to hone in on what is relevant and changing in reserves classification and evaluation of in situ projects and how this is impacting reserves process best practices and outcomes. Geoscientists and reservoir engineers will share their observations, perspectives and unique insights on practical considerations associated with key aspects of their reserves estimation methods. The format, designed to elicit engagement, includes a combination of presentations and panel from a wide variety of organizations including the Alberta Energy Regulator, Athabasca Oil Corporation, BMO Capital Markets, Cenovus, Devon, GLJ Petroleum Consultants, Laricina, OSUM and Suncor.

The two morning sessions will focus on operator experiences and go-forward perspectives as they relate to technical reserves assessment and supply costs.

  • With the oldest SAGD projects pointing towards higher than expected recoverable volumes, what has the industry learned since the technology was first commercialized and how is this changing best practices for reserves estimation within the sector?
  • In response to the lower-for-longer commodity pricing shift, how are operators affecting the necessary cost reductions? In order improve supply costs, what real strategies and emerging technologies are being pursued and how do these efforts impact a company’s decision gate process?

The two afternoon sessions will focus on pending best practice change and regulatory matters, augmenting operator views with perspectives from reserves, regulatory and investment professionals.

  • Understand the rationale behind the pending Canadian Oil and Gas Evaluation Handbook (COGEH) update including the Bitumen Guidelines. What aspects of in situ reserves estimation and the associated reserves and resources classification process are likely to be affected?
  • Understand what we do and don’t know with respect to pending regulatory changes including a discussion on project applications, carbon tax, the carbon cap and methane emissions. Learn about the potential impact on in situ reserves and industry competitiveness

This workshop is designed for (i) engineers and geoscientists involved in reserves estimation, project valuation and project advancement, (ii) reserves management leadership and other individuals that are a part of the reserves management process and (iii) individuals interested in staying abreast of current topics and changes in reserves estimation and the reserves process.  For a basic introduction to in situ reserves, individuals are directed to the Canadian Heavy Oil Association In Situ Reserves and Resources Fundamentals Course.
