For many operators, SAGD liner integrity continues to be a challenge, impacting well inventory and availability, production volumes, downhole and surface equipment integrity, demanding focused resources and affecting and project economics.  In this D&C Technical Panel Session, subject matter experts representing a diverse cross section of the SAGD sector will describe the evolution of their liner integrity, risk-ranking, monitoring, intervention, mitigation and repair methods in their operations and within the SAGD sector; their learnings regarding key influential factors; and their current and future plans related SAGD liner integrity.  Following a set of short presentations by the panel members, attendees will be encouraged to engage the panel in an interactive discussion session where audience questions will be discussed, and to further explore and expand on the topics introduced by the panel.


Presenters and Abstracts:

Dr. Uliana Romanova has 25 years of work experience in research and technology for heavy oil and oil sands, in both academia and industry.  Currently, she works at Baker Hughes, a GE Company.   The area of her expertise is sand control for thermal production operations.   She is an author and co-author of over 50 technical publications.  Uliana made numerous presentations at industry technical conferences and workshops.  She is a recipient of the Distinguished Service Award of the Petroleum Society of CIM and the 2016 Regional Service Award of SPE Canada in Formation Evaluation.  She serves on a variety of SPE technical committees, including SPE Thermal Well Integrity and Design Symposium and SPE ATCE 2019.

Abstract: Overview of Thermal Wellbore Liner Failures Mechanisms 

The presentation will include a brief comparison of different sand control technologies for thermal wells followed by an overview of the main well failure mechanisms from the sand control perspective such as corrosion and plugging and the quality of liner manufacturing, which is often overlooked and can also lead to well failure.


Devon Osecki is the Oil Sands Completions Engineering Team Lead for Nexen Energy ULC. He graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with a degree in Geological Engineering in 2006 and has worked for Nexen the past twelve years. The first four years were dedicated to working in heavy oil in the Lloydminster area before taking on roles in the international division working on offshore West Africa and Yemen assets. In 2013 Devon joined the Oil Sands Completions and Well Servicing team.  His team is responsible for day to day well servicing for all wells located within Nexen’s Oil Sands acreage which includes 140 SAGD well-pairs along with designing new completions for future developments.  He has been directly involved in fifteen liner repairs over the past five years.

Abstract: Evolution of Nexen’s liner repair toolkit 

Liner failures are a common phenomenon for Oil Sands operators.  As wells mature and the pressure mounts to continuously increase production the expectation on well productivity forces tough decisions on how to operate the well and how to repair them once they’ve failed. Each operator has their own economic thresholds when it comes to repair or redrill options. Nexen’s toolkit has evolved over the past five years and will continue to be enhanced as new technologies evolve and more data is collected. Prior to rectifying a failure, an integrated project team decision is required when to ensure all stakeholders are aligned and the full life cycle economics have been considered as varying repair options can potentially impair or enhance production and reserves.


Marty Lastiwka After graduating from Mechanical Engineering at the University of Alberta, Marty followed his love of Guinness to Galway, Ireland to do a PhD.  Returning a few years later to Edmonton he started working with CFER Technologies where he was introduced to the energy industry. 


After nearly six years with CFER working as a researcher, he moved to Calgary to join Suncor in 2012.  He is currently working as a production engineer on the MacKay River resource, where his responsibilities consist of a balanced mix of practical application and innovative concept development.


Abstract: Suncor MacKay River’s Liner Integrity Experience 

Effect of elevated pressure drop/drawdown on liner failures, and the observation that steam breakthrough alone may not be sufficient to cause liner failures.

Barkim Demirdal is Well Integrity Engineer for Devon focusing mainly on Devon’s Jackfish operation for the last four years. He has been working on thermal well drilling, completion, design related areas for the last eleven years.  Barkim Demirdal is member of APEGA and SPE.


Abstract: Operational risk assessment tool for maintaining liner integrity in a higher well count and aging wells

Overview of the process put in place five years ago at Devon Canada which was developed to maximize well pair production performance while reducing the risk of subcool related events at Jackfish.  Continuation of this was the development of an Operational Risk Assessment.  The overview will include the identified KPIs developed to construct a risk-based model and how the model was embedded to the work flow for production engineers going forward to identify wells where suggested mitigations were identified and implemented.  This includes the use the Ultrasonic Test (UT) data obtained at surface to identify potential downhole problems related to liner failures.
