SAGD Wellbore 2.0: Re-thinking Well Design for SAGD
Since the first successful demonstration of SAGD over 2 decades ago, there have been many technological advances in the world. When the UTF SAGD pilot started in 1994, the World Wide Web was just being born, there was no Google, smart phones did not exist, and a computer (with 4 MB of RAM, 720 MB hard drive and 14″ Super VGA) could be had for about $1,998 USD at Best Buy!
The SAGD wellbore has also evolved since the UTF days, technology advances have enabled surface drilled wells, infill drilling, improved dog legs, ESPs that can withstand high temperature, better instrumentation, and flow control devices for steam distribution.
As the world radically changes with drones, automation, AI and battery technology, we are left asking: what about the SAGD wellbore? What will the SAGD wellbore of the future look like? As economic pressures increase and as the technology toolbox grows, SAGD operators have started to re-consider the current wellbore design. In this technical panel, SAGD industry representatives will discuss how they’ve remained competitive through extended reach drilling, multilateral wells, improved sand control, FCDs and consistent design.
