 About CHOA

Accelerate your career through knowledge and relationships in heavy oil.


The purpose of the CHOA is to strengthen Canada’s energy industry by providing our members and sponsors, and the general public, with technical, educational and social programs that accelerate and expand their knowledge, relationships and influence in our heavy oil community. Building on the expertise of our members and volunteers, the breadth of our programs range from highly technical events to cross-disciplinary introductory sessions.


Our activities:

Add intelligence and clarity across our industry, and provide volunteers the opportunity to participate and lead exciting initiatives. The strength of the heavy oil community is the people that discover, innovate, produce, and support this critical energy resource. Our social events are built specifically to foster positive and dynamic connections.

CHOA Board of Directors

CHOA Board members are integral to the success of the association and are key ambassadors and communicators with our members and the Heavy Oil Industry. The board composition will ideally bring together a diverse range of skills and will also have representation from producers, service companies and other professions that help foster our community. 

Board work is focused on:

1)      Overseeing the governance and strategic direction for the association,

2)      Setting, monitoring, and supporting delivery of results,

3)      Participating in committee and working group meetings,

4)      Recruiting new members and collaborators,

5)      Being accountable for achieving the association’s budget, financial, and                 operational success and

6)      Representing the CHOA Board and the strategic plan within the heavy oil             community.

All CHOA Board members shall:

·  Be an oil industry professional, industry collaboration professional (Gov.,             NGO, Post-Secondary, Other), or retired from their career within the                   Industry,

· Have a minimum of five years’ work experience,

· Attend Board, strategy and other designated working meetings and

· Adequately prepare for all Board activities and meetings.

Past CHOA volunteer experience is an asset.

Timelines for CHOA Board Applicants

 January 16-2019         Application/nomination process opens

 February 8-2019        Application/nomination process closes

 February 28-2019      Communication with candidates comes to a close

 April 11, 2019            CHOA Annual General Meeting (AGM)


The application deadline is February 8-2019 and will be followed by interviews for candidates who are moving to the next stage.
